your final marks are posted. If any of you did the take-home, I haven’t factored that in. I am away teaching the travel/study course right now but if there is an exam waiting in the office, just drop me a line. Not a problem; I can change the mark later.

One of you asked about taking down her blog. You certainly may, but could I suggest leaving them up for posterity? There was some good discussion going on.

I enjoyed the course. You are an interested group and had a lot of good things to say. Hope to see some of you again in future classes.

All caught up!

If you have a zero for something, that means I didn’t receive it. If you did in fact hand something in, let me know, preferably with the paper attached.

Papers are ready for pick-up (or will be very soon) in the Hum. and Lang. office. If you would like me to mail it to you, please send me your surface address.

If any of you decide to write the optional take-home, let me know soon so I don’t enter a final grade for you.  I am going away on the 30th of this month so you would have to send it to me electronically, by May 3rd please.

I am canceling class on March 27th because of the demonstration against the “one-size-fits-all” changes to the education system at the provincial legislature in Fredericton. I hope buses will be organized; if not, there will be cars going up.

I posted a pile o’ links to my other blog, and there is a ton of activity on Facebook around the issue.

We will discuss the readings on imperialism the following week, and both Simon’s presentation and the due date for the final paper have been postponed one week as well (thank you Simon!).

Due to a negative confluence of the stars — a migraine that won’t go away; a six-year old at home on yet another snow day; the family car up in Fredericton and hence unavailable — I am going to cancel class today. The Datatel system is down for maintenance so I can’t email the class or post to the regular cancellation site; I will check it periodically in case it goes back up in time. I will dig up as many of your email addresses as I have in my mailer, post to FB, and leave messages on the blogs of the rest. If you are in touch with anyone in the class, please pass the message on.

Lisa and Kate were to have presented today. If they are agreeable, they can present first thing next week.

We can take comfort in the knowledge that when we live under air bubbles on the moon, science has cured most maladies, and citizens enjoy practically instantaneous rapid transit, this sort of thing will no longer happen.

The schedule has been fleshed out (and the dates corrected!) and the assignments have been posted.

There is a possibility that I have mislaid the sheet on which I recorded your choices for presentations. I may yet find it, but if you don’t mind dropping me a line, that would be great.

IMPORTANT ACADEMIC DEADLINE FOR STUDENTS

Friday, January 18th is the final day to add classes for the 2008/Winter term.

It is also the deadline date to drop a 2008/Winter term course, and have it ‘deleted’ completely from the academic record (no W notation on transcript).

For those individuals enrolled in a full year course, Friday, January 18th is the final date to withdraw without academic penalty (W) on record.

You are urged to ensure your registration status is complete and accurate.

and welcome to the weblog for English 3722: Topics in Speculative Fiction, Winter 2008. Here you will find the schedule, assignments, updates, and discussion. To start you off, however, here is an interesting article by Bryan Appleyard in the Sunday Times online, “Why don’t we love science fiction? The British are sniffy about sci-fi, but there is nothing artificial in its ability to convey apprehension about the universe and ourselves” (Dec 2/07), which talks about how we are now living in a science fiction scenario.

Hence the title of this blog.
